Abstract

The increasing emphasis on the sustainability of agricultural practices has created a pressing need to adopt cutting-edge approaches that enhance nutrient-use efficiency and crop productivity. Traditional fertilizers tend to have low usage rates, loss of nutrients and environmental issues. It is against this background that this study seeks to come up with a quantum dot (QD)-modified nano-fertilizer system that would enhance the growth of plants and their ability to absorb nutrients. The nano-fertilizer was developed by incorporating the semiconductor QDs in the standard nutrient formulations, enabling controlled nutrient release and enhancing interactions with plant roots. The developed system was verified in a controlled environment by testing the growth parameters of the plants, chlorophyll concentration, and uptake of the macronutrients. The findings showed good enhancement in plant height, root growth and accumulated biomass as opposed to the use of conventional fertilizer. As the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake increased, the efficiency of nutrient uptake also improved and the content of chlorophyll was higher indicating enhanced photosynthetic activity. Thus, quantum dots can be used to facilitate effective nutrient delivery and physiological improvement in plants. In this work, quantum dot nanomaterials were incorporated into fertilizer systems to form a multifunctional precision agricultural platform. This is a good avenue for producing sustainable crops with less environmental costs.
